Canada / ˈ k æ n ə d ə / is a country occupying most of northern North America, extending from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west and northward into the Arctic Ocean. It is the world's second largest country by total area. Canada's common border with the United States to the south and northwest is the longest in the world, and over 80% of the Canadian population lives within 150 km of it. As a northern country, most of Canada is noted for cold winters, although summers can be quite warm and oranges and grapes are grown in some areas. It is also very urban, with over 80% of the population living in an urban or suburban area. Canada is known for its diverse natural beauty, wildlife, abundant natural resources, and its people's commitment to fairness and equality for all. The land occupied by Canada was inhabited for millennia by various groups of Aboriginal people. Beginning in the late 15th century, British and French expeditions explored, and later settled along, the Atlantic coast. France ceded nearly all of its colonies in North America in 1763 after the Seven Years' War. In 1867, with the union of three British North American colonies through Confederation, Canada was formed as a federal dominion of four provinces. This began an accretion of provinces and territories and a process of increasing autonomy from the United Kingdom. This widening autonomy was highlighted by the Statute of Westminster of 1931 and culminated in the Canada Act of 1982, which severed the vestiges of legal dependence on the British parliament. A federation consisting of ten provinces and three territories, Canada is governed as a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. It is a bilingual nation with both English and French as official languages at the federal level. One of the world's highly developed countries, Canada has a diversified economy that is reliant upon its abundant natural resources and upon trade—particularly with the United States, with which Canada has had a long and complex relationship. It is a member of the G8, G-20, NATO, OECD, WTO, Commonwealth, Francophonie, OAS, APEC, and UN. From Wikipedia under the

Q. There seems to be more than just a gentleman's disagreement between countries in regard to the sovereignty of huge areas of the Arctic . If a powerful nation moves in and develops waters or basins considered Canada, what would Canada do? Could Canadians have the gall to ask the Yanks for help, after years of spitting at their southern 'neighbors'? Asked by screaming monk - Sun Jun 29 22:51:15 2008 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments A. The canadian and US "disagreement" is only localized in certain social groups. The US's greatest trade ally is Canada and though, as with every country to another, there have been disputes, at the moment, we are working very well with Canada and Likewise. Answered by terry t - Wed Sep 30 06:40:06 2009 How come the prime minister of Canada has no power or authority?
Q. It seems like the prime minister of Canada has no real power or authority. I say this as a canadian. Compared too the president of the US it looks that way, I know the US is a lot bigger (population wise) and has more power than canada but still. And when the prime minister is speaking at that house thing there is all these losers yelling in the back. Everything has too go threw all these votes and no one agrees so nothing really ends up happening. Could someone explain why? Also what the prime ministers powers are? Thanks so much! Asked by Tina Get The Axe! - Thu Apr 30 15:44:28 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Actually the Prime Minister has a great deal of power. He chooses the Ministers, leads the direction that the party takes, and he sets the agenda of the government. I also say he, because Prime Minister Harper is the current Prime Minister. I would say that the Prime Minister is more involved with the day to day dealings of the government that the American President. The Prime Minister has to spend some time amongst the MPs. It just so happens that there is not a majority government currently and in order to maintain his grip on power, he has to negotiate with the other parties. Like a true democracy. Believe it or not the yelling is part of the game. The opposition is yelling to voice their constituents' concerns.
